For the first time, the Penn State College of Earth and Mineral Sciences has Millennium Scholars in all class levels — from graduating seniors to first-year students. MatSE's own Donovan Moses and Ana De La Fuente Duran are two of the more than two dozen scholars that are making an impact on improving diversity in STEM fields.
Vincent H. Crespi, distinguished professor of physics, materials science and engineering, and chemistry, for being named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest general scientific society. He is being recognized for his distinguished contributions to the theoretical understanding of nanoscale materials, including carbon nanotubes and artificial spin ice.

Students in the Intercollege Graduate Degree Program (IGDP) in Materials Science and Engineering (MatSE) find success in many different ways.
The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (EMS) will be raising money to support the Millennium Scholars Program on Giving Tuesday, slated to begin at 6:55 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 2, and lasting through 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
Researchers at Penn State have been awarded more than a combined $3.3 million to support advancements in the performance and efficiency of combustion turbines and turbine-based power cycles in fossil fuel power generation.
Applicants apply for admission to the Intercollege Graduate Degree Program in Materials Science and Engineering via the Penn State Graduate School application for admission. Requirements listed here are in addition to Graduate Council policies listed under GCAC-300 Admissions Policies.
Applicants with baccalaureate degrees in the physical sciences and engineering with a Junior/Senior grade point average of 3.3/4.0 or higher will be considered for admission.
Scores for the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) are optional, not required for admission.
The language of instruction at Penn State is English. English proficiency test scores (TOEFL/IELTS) may be required for international applicants. See GCAC-305 Admission Requirements for International Students for more information.

Five materials research students pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees earned fellowship offers from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program.
The program aims to support “outstanding graduate students who are pursuing full-time research-based master’s and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics or in STEM education,” according to nsf.gov.
Students receive three years of support within a five-year fellowship period during their graduate education by proving they have “potential for significant research achievements.” The NSF estimates that 1,500 awards are made each year, with anticipated funding of $138,000 per award.
