**MatSE 590 All graduate students are required to take MatSE 590**

The MatSE 590 for graduate students consists of an exciting and jam-packed schedule. MATSE 590 is a colloquium (1-3 credits) consist of a series of individual lectures by faculty, students, or outside speakers.

Support for the MatSE 590 Seminars is provided by the generous industry members of the Friends of MatSE program.

Graduate students will receive a weekly email with information via @psu.edu email. Graduate students are required to attend all 590 Seminars. If you have any questions, please email the graduate office at gradoffice@matse.psu.edu.

Description

The Energy Institute (EI) and the Alliance for Education, Science, Engineering, and Design with Africa (AESEDA), in the the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (EMS), are jointly launching a student-led seminar initiative beginning in the Fall 2025 semester. This initiative is designed to provide a platform for graduate students affiliated with EI and/or AESEDA to present their research and engage in scholarly exchange through monthly seminars. Additionally, we will also have invited talks and career development discussions during the seminars.

Science Policy Society invites you to the August 2025 Science on Tap: The Optimization of Urban Transportation! On Thursday, August 28 at 7:00 pm, we will be joined by Dr. Ilgin Guler at Axemann Brewery to learn about how urban transportation can be optimized to increase safety, reliability, and value. As always, you can grab seats/drinks as early as 6:00 pm and talks will begin at 7:00 pm. Hope to see you there

Superconductors enable electrons to flow through without any resistance, like a superhighway, enabling more efficient energy and advanced electronic devices.

Electricity flows through wires to deliver power, but it loses energy as it moves, delivering less than it started with. But that energy loss isn’t a given. Scientists at Penn State have found a new way to identify types of materials known as superconductors that allow power to travel without any resistance, meaning no energy is lost.
