
A major goal of our college is to foster and enrich the academic experiences of students who seek exceptional challenges and growth. In recognition of superior academic accomplishments, we offer academic awards and prestigious scholarships along with other competitive research and writing competitions awards.
The deadline for applying to the awards below is February 15.
GEMS Diamond Award: Established in 2006, The Graduates of Earth and Mineral Sciences (GEMS) Diamond Award honors and recognizes outstanding all-around achievement by a graduating student who shows excellence and balance in academic achievement and volunteer involvement in both university and community activities during their time as a College of Earth and Mineral Sciences student.
Dean Edward Steidle Memorial Scholar Award: Established to honor Dean Edward Steidle, who was dean of the College from 1929 to 1953, this award is given to a truly outstanding scholar in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. To be eligible for the award, a student must be a graduating senior who plans to go to graduate school. Dean Steidle award is $2,000.
Ellen Steidle Achievement Award: Established in 1953 by Dean Edward Steidle to honor the memory of his wife, Ellen Girsham Steidle, the Ellen Steidle Achievement Award recognizes junior and senior EMS students for their service to the college. Students in good academic standing with at least two semesters as an EMS student may apply. A recommendation letter from a faculty or staff member is required. Senior Award: $1200; Junior Award: $800.
