The curriculum in MatSE is designed to help you achieve your fullest academic potential, while building a competitive package that fosters your professional, personal, and intellectual growth. We strive to provide our graduates with a well-rounded education and research experience that will serve them well should they go directly into industry or continue on to graduate school.
Our program offers a large and diverse faculty with a high faculty to student ratio. We offer an in-depth education over the full spectrum of materials science and engineering. Undergraduate students customize their curriculum by choosing specialization courses in metals, ceramics, polymers, glass, electronic materials, biomaterials, sustainability and more. To assist students in charting their course of study, we have prepared a suggested academic plan.
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MatSE) is dedicated to providing support to our graduate students. This section is designed for MatSE graduate students to quickly access the tools and resources they need. Check out the below to find information you may need. Please do not hesitate to contact your advisor if you have questions.
Graduate students are busy. Between classes, work, research, family, and other commitments, there is a lot to balance. Finding time for just about anything else may be a challenge but joining an organization or participating in extracurricular activities can be very rewarding, a great way to build a bigger network, and might even be fun.
Whether you are looking for academic or personal support, or to gain leadership experience, or influence university policy, there are multiple organizations and activities to participate in as a MatSE graduate student such as the Materials Research Society (MRS), the EMS Graduate Student Council, and the Penn State Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA).
Within MatSE there are various activities for graduate students to participate in as well as sponsored college and University activities. Graduate students are invited to participate in The Steidle Café where once a month, a faculty member, a staff member, and a graduate student present to the MatSE community in a relaxed forum and talk about themselves, where they are from, a vacation they took, and a big picture summary of their research. Each spring, MatSE solicits entries for both the Graduate Poster Competition and the Materials Visualization Competition.
Located in 225 Steidle Building, the Undergraduate Student Services Office is available to assist students with general questions about the department and to provide assistance with:
