
Materials—including ceramics, metals, polymers, and composites—are essential to the advancement of modern industry and key to most engineering discipline. MatSE graduates pursue careers or advanced study across a wide range of fields, including energy, medicine, sustainability, electronics, communications, transportation, aerospace, defense, and infrastructure.
The mission of the department is to develop leaders in materials science and engineering, generate scientific discoveries, and enable new opportunities that serve 21st century societal needs through educational innovation, groundbreaking research, entrepreneurial pursuits, translational impact, and community outreach.
For our undergraduate students, this means providing a well-rounded engineering education with a strong emphasis on materials science and engineering. Our program is designed to prepare students to meet the evolving needs of industry, academia, and government, while engaging in research at the frontiers of the field and fostering leadership across the multidisciplinary materials community.
