At the conference, Nathan McIlwaine received the Richerson Educational Outreach Award from the American Ceramic Society (ACerS) for his outreach to K–12 students during his time as a graduate student at Penn State. Eager to share his passion for materials science, he volunteered at STEM events, including the COSI Science Festival, where he demonstrated how materials science shapes everyday life. He also participated in the National Science Teaching Association conference, speaking with teachers about ways to bring materials science into their classrooms.
“Through demonstrations like pulling thin glass-like fibers from melted Jolly Rancher candy or showing twisted shape-memory alloys return to their original form in hot water, I try to share some of the wonder behind the concepts of materials science,” McIlwaine said.
He has turned his passion for outreach into a career. McIlwaine is a program manager at the Ceramic and Glass Industry Foundation where he oversees education outreach initiatives for K-12, undergraduate, and graduate-level science and engineering students.
McIlwaine earned his doctorate in material science and engineering in 2025 and was advised by Jon-Paul Maria, Dorothy Pate Enright Professor of Materials Science. At Penn State, his research focused on thin-film growth and high-hardness coating.
