Shawn Kelly, Ph.D.
Director of Applications Engineering and Technology
Huntersville, North Carolina
"Not Another Lecture on Good AM Applications"
For every good application for additive manufacturing, there many not-so-good applications. The seminar will touch upon the good applications with examples in aerospace, medical, and automotive, but focus on those applications where the technology is not quite ready. Suggestions will be offered on how the user can close the gaps at the design/printing stage and how SLM Solutions is implementing new products, in collaboration with our customers and partners, to close these gaps. In addition, the seminar will encourage having a broader view beyond the “printer button” necessary to implement metal AM.
Dr. Shawn Kelly has been involved in research, development and implementation of metal additive manufacturing since 1999. He enjoys the relationships between the 3D printing processes, the materials that are produced, and post-printing operations necessary to manufacture industrial components using AM. As Director of Applications Engineering and Technology in the Americas for SLM Solutions, he guides customers on their AM adoption journey. Prior to joining SLM he has served in little “r” big “D” positions at Oerlikon AM, EWI and ARL Penn State. His degrees are from the Materials Science and Engineering Department at Virginia Tech.
