SAFETY EXAM INFORMATION
MatSE Department Policy requires that all students pass the department safety exam before we can grant access to any of the department labs, which includes the computer lab. You can prepare for the exam by reading the safety manual located on the MatSE Department website: http://www.matse.psu.edu/safety/matse_safety_manual.pdf

To schedule a safety exam, e-mail Safety@matse.psu.edu and request the information.

 

All MatSE members are required to:
Report any accident to your supervisor (no matter how minor the injury) so they can fill out an    Accident Report immediately after becoming stabilized following an incident. Reference Penn State
   Policy SY04.
Become familiar with the MatSE Safety manual
Take and Pass the MatSE Safety Exam as soon as possible, even if you don't work in a lab.
-- You are not allowed to work in a lab until you pass this exam.--
Read and understand the EMS Emergency Evacuation Plan
Become familiar with the Enviromental Health and Safety (EH&S) website
Become familiar with the rules and procedures for safety and emergencies



Initial Chemical and Hazardous Waste Handling Training (1 hr)
Required of anyone who supervises or works in an area using flammable, acidic or basic, toxic or reactive chemicals. This course is available for groups larger than 10 on-site or weekly in the office of Environmental Health and Safety, 6 Eisenhower Parking Deck. Click above for class schedule. Registration is required by contacting EHS at 865-6391.
(A copy of this certificate must be kept in the Chemical Waste Log book of every lab you work in, and a copy must go to Scott Henninger in Room 2 Steidle)

Mandatory Refresher Training
Required Annually
(A copy of this certificate must also be kept in the Chemical Waste Log book of every lab you work in, and a copy must also go to Scott Henninger in Room 2 Steidle)

X-Ray Safety Training (4 hours)
Required of everyone prior to working with X-Ray machines. This course consists of online training, and a in-house practical training session, which is scheduled approximately once per week and is held in room 229 Academic Projects Building. Click above for details and for instructions to access the online portion of the course.

Right-To-Know Training (0.5 hr)
Must be offered to all new University employees within 120 days of hire, and offered annually to all other University employees. Scheduled monthly in the office of Environmental Health and Safety, 6 Eisenhower Parking Deck, generally on the third Thursday of each month. Click here for the current schedule. Also available on-site for any number of people, and can be customized to the chemicals and materials in use.
