Safety Requirements

Requirements for All MatSE Members:

1. MatSE Safety Exam is REQUIRED by all members of the department.
SAFETY EXAM INFORMATION: MatSE Department Policy requires that all members pass the department safety exam before we can grant access to the building, offices, or laboratories. You can prepare for the exam by reading the safety manual located on the MatSE Department website and the EH&S Laboratory Safety Pamphlet. To schedule a safety exam, e-mail safety@matse.psu.edu and request the safety exam information.
2. Safety Glasses are REQUIRED in all department laboratories, even if you are only there for a short time. After completing your Safety Exam, stop by the MatSE Safety Office in room 2 Steidle to pick up your very own pair of safety Glasses.
3. EH&S Laboratory Safety Training. (initial and annual refresher):
3a. Laboratory Safety- (Initial)  This course is a one-time requirement under the Chemical Safety Program required of anyone who supervises or works in an area using flammable, acidic, basic, toxic or reactive chemicals. A summary of the program requirements can be found at the Hazardous Waste Disposal Program Snapshot with more detail at the Chemical Safety Program webpage. The training is provided online, followed by a final review session presented by EHS.
(A copy of this certificate must be kept in the Chemical Waste Log book of every lab you work in, and a copy must go to Scott Henninger in Room 2 Steidle)
3b. Mandatory Refresher Training (required annually) Face to face refresher training is now a requirement in MatSE.  After Sept 24,2010, if you have not attended one of the MatSE Safety Week Refresher Training sessions, then you must attend an EH&S Laboratory Safety Initial Training session at Room 6 Eisenhower Parking Deck.  We no longer accept the online version of refresher training.

4. Chemical Inventory Management System (CHIMS) training required to maintain the research group chemical inventory. CHIMS training is available through EH&S. Laboratory Overseer training is required of anyone appointed to oversee the Chemical and Hazardous Waste log book. This training can be found on CD in most of the Chemical and Hazardous Waste Log Books. If there is not a copy in your lab, please stop by the MatSE Safety Office and pick up a copy.
5. Become familiar with the Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) website.
6. Become familiar with the rules and procedures for safety and emergencies outlined on the MatSE Safety Poster located in the Departmental Laboratories
