Arkema Fluoropolymers is the world leading producer of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymers and copolymers. Fluoropolymers R&D is a leader in new application developments and product innovation. The Kynar® Industrial R&D is responsible for new application/product development, and technical service to support key new growth opportunities and key customers in existing business. There is close coordination with our European and Asian technical centers to globally share technical expertise effectively.
This position’s responsibility includes new product scientific research, technical new application research and technical service to support key North American markets. The new product research role supports the global Fluoropolymer industrial business. Main markets served are the water filtration & separations market and the polymer processing aid market for olefin film. This position will initially focus on inventing new products and developing strong scientific understanding of our new products and applications. The position will work closely with R&D Manager, Business Development, Sales and the Analytical Sciences Department.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Lead scientific research for new product development and technical application development for defined markets or applications. This includes developing understanding of the impact of polymer structure on processing and end product performance. Identify new technical capabilities needed to pursue research and new equipment required. Research and understand of the technical standards, technical literature and technical trends in the assigned markets. Research and analyze competitive and complementary material technologies. Coordinate work closely with Business Development Engineers/Manager or Marketing and Sales.
Assume primary responsibility for technical service (TS) activities for defined markets including customer training, tooling and process recommendations, troubleshooting, and failure analysis. Technical service must be timely and utilize effort that is proportional to the defined opportunity. Develop presentations as needed to support Technical Service activities.
Process troubleshooting and/or failure analysis will involve defining the problem, developing and supporting experimentation or customer trials, and defining root cause and corrective actions. Plan and execute processing studies in KOP labs, analyze data and draft reports for internal personnel and external customers to support technical service needs and defined research and development program needs.
Team work, excellent written and verbal communications are key dimensions of the job. This position will report to the R&D Manager and work closely team members from R&D, business development and sales/marketing. . Relative priority of research and technical service topics will be aligned with R&D management objectives.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
Maintain safe working environment. Become technical expert on new product/application areas assigned and become polymer processing and technical service expert for key markets assigned. Timely, proportional response to customers. Timely reporting for technical service reports, and trial reports. Maintain good documentation of root cause analysis, corrective action, and results of efforts. Identify through TS and literature research new product opportunities for the Fluoropolymers business. Plan, execute and report on research needed for new product and new application programs. Utilize sound experimental programs to support new technical service requests that require polymer processing.

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
MS in Polymer Science or Material Science or related field with 5-7 years of industrial experience
PhD with 2 to 5 years industrial experience
Understanding of polymer structure property relationships
Experience in one or more polymer processing techniques and polymer rheology.
Project leadership experience and ability to work independently
Hands on orientation to conduct experiments, maintain equipment is a must
Knowledge of adsorbents technology is preferred
Excellent organization skills, strong interpersonal skills and proven track record of working in teams
Ability to communicate with and maintain good relations with internal and external customers
Excellent written communication skills and proficiency in word, excel, powerpoint and statistical analysis
