Engel-Herbert Receives Professorship

Professor Roman Engel-Herbert named inaugural Norris B. McFarlane Career Professor in Materials Science and Engineering

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering would like to congratulate Dr. Roman Engel-Herbert on receiving the inaugural Norris B. McFarlane Career Professorship.  Dr. Engel-Herbert joined the department in July 2010 after a post-doctoral position in the Materials Department at The University of California - Santa Barbara.  His research about the growth of functional oxide thin films by molecular beam epitaxy is at the forefront of technology.  His research has impact in power generation and energy harvesting technologies, such as thermoelectric and photovoltaics, as well as information technology for memory and logic device applications.

The Professorship is part of a$1 million commitment from the estate of Cathleen McFarlane-Ross, longtime friend of Penn State. McFarlane-Ross's gift honors her late husband, industrialist Norris “Mac” McFarlane, who graduated from Penn State in 1934 with a bachelor of science degree in metallurgy.
