MatSE Welcomes New Faculty Member

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering is pleased to announce that Dr. Nasim Alem will join the MatSE faculty as an Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Engineering beginning January 2013. Her research interests are focused on the study of structure-property relationships in nanostructural materials, composites, metals and ceramics using transmission electron microscopy.

Dr. Alem has been a postdoctoral research scientist in the Physics Department at the University of California - Berkeley working in Professor Alex Zettles group since 2008. During this time she has studied the atomic scale structure of two dimensional crystals such as graphene using aberration-corrected electron microscopy located at the National Center for Electron Microscopy at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Prior to this appointment, Nasim worked with Professor Vinayak Dravid in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University, where she studied nanoscale mechanics of lamellar metal-ceramic structural composite model systems.

We would like to thank the Search Committee (Suzanne Mohney, Clive Randall, Arthur Motta, and Ray Schaak) for their hard work in concluding this successful search.
