CONGRATULATIONS TO Nathan Smith, MATSE'S 2017 SAFETY AWARD WINNER

Nathan Smith receiving the safety award

Nathan Smith, graduate, is the current chair of the Lab Safety Managers and is constantly working toward a safer working environment. He publishes the Stall Wall Safety newsletter every month, takes charge of lab inspections and scheduled the safety moments at the beginning of the MatSE 590 seminars in the fall. He is always available if someone needs help and is very approachable.

"Nathan Smith has been serving as Laboratory Safety Manager in my Group over the last two years," one nominator said. "He provided an excellent lab-specific training for both graduate and undergraduate researchers. Some examples include the identification of safety equipment (e.g., lab masks) in handling powder samples and safe operating procedures in high temperature experiments. In addition, he maintained high standards for the laboratory safety through weekly all-together laboratory clean-ups and safety inspections. I believe his dedication to laboratory safety goes beyond the standard practices, as also can be seen his role as the chair of the Laboratory of Safety Managers for the department."
