Prospective Students

Prospective Students:

The Intercollege Materials Science and Engineering Graduate Degree Program will offer comprehensive graduate education in the fundamentals of materials science (synthesis–structure–property–performance relationships). Faculty have interests in many research areas including biomaterials, ceramics, composites and hybrids, computational materials science, electronic and photonic materials, materials chemistry and physics, metals, nanostructured and nanoscale materials, piezoelectrics and ferroelectrics, polymers and soft materials. Students may choose to study across the major themes of materials today including materials in energy applications, nanotechnology, materials in medicine, materials in communications, materials for sensor applications, structural materials, etc., by using a combination of MatSE courses and a myriad of materials-related courses offered in the science and engineering departments at Penn State.

For more detailed information on research areas, coursework, application materials and more, click on the appropriate link on the lefthand side of the page.

The Women in Materials Science and Engineering Task Force recommended an ombudsperson for MatSE this past year. The Department is pleased to announce that Dr. Paul Howell will hold this position. This position will serve the needs of the students in MatSE and will assist in the MatSE community in solving problems and conflicts. Please see the attached detailed role of this position.

"Penn State University is committed to an open, sensitive, understanding, and responsive environment. The single most important key to opening the doors wider to all people is to create an environment in which everyone feels welcome. To do this, we must eliminate intolerance and harassment within what should be an enlightened community to faculty, staff and students."
Graham B. Spanier, President
