Bio

Todd A. Palmer holds a joint appointment as a Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics and Materials Science and Engineering at Penn State.  He is also the director of the Center for Innovative Sintered Products in the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics.  Prior to assuming his current position, he was with the Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State from 2007 to 2017, where he rose to the rank of Senior Scientist.  From 2000 to 2007, he was at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Livermore, Calif., where he was a metallurgist in the Materials Science and Technology Division.  

He earned his BS and MS degrees in metals science and engineering and PhD in materials science and engineering (1999) from Pennsylvania State University.  He also holds a master of business administration degree from Pennsylvania State University.

Awards and Accomplishments

2010 and 2017 McKay-Helm Award, American Welding Society This award is presented to the authors of papers published in the Welding Journal during the previous calendar year for the best contribution to the advancement of knowledge relative to the welding of low alloy steels, stainless steels, or the application of surfacing weld metals.
2016 Joseph Whitworth Award, Manufacturing Industries Division Board of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (UK) This award is presented to the authors of the best paper on a manufacturing industries mechanical engineering subject published by the Institution in the previous year or for a contribution or for achievement in that field.
2015 Adams Memorial Membership Award, American Welding Society This award recognizes educators for outstanding teaching activities in their undergraduate and postgraduate engineering institutions.
2007 and 2008 A.F. Davis Silver Medal Award, American Welding Society This award is presented to the authors of papers published in the Welding Journal during the previous calendar year that represent the best contribution to the progress of welding in the area of machine design and maintenance and surfacing.
2006 Prof. Koichi Masubuchi Award, American Welding Society This award is presented to an individual under the age of 40 years who has made significant contributions to the advancement of science and technology of materials joining through research and development.
2004 William Sparagen Memorial Award, American Welding Society. This award is presented to the overall best research paper published in the Welding Journal in 2004.
2000 Geoffrey Belton Award, The Iron and Steel Society. This award is presented to the best doctoral thesis in the fields of iron and steel submitted during 1999-2000.

Research

He is the author or coauthor of more than 80 articles and reports and holds four patents in the area of electron beam diagnostics.  His current research interests involve the laser and electron beam additive manufacturing of metallic materials, characterization of phase transformations in structural materials using synchrotron-based in situ X-ray diffraction techniques, high energy density (electron and laser beam) welding and joining processes, and electron beam welding diagnostics.  

Dr. Palmer currently conducts research and has active programs with professors Tarasankar DebRoy,  Long-Qing Chen, and Allison Beese and is part of the Center for Innovative Materials Processing through Direct Digital Deposition (CIMP-3D)
