We regret to inform our colleagues around the world that Robert Everest Newnham has passed away (16 April 2009) at the age of 80 (1929-2009). He was very well known throughout the international crystallographic, ferroelectric, and materials communities.
At the time of his passing he was Professor Emeritus of Solid State Science at the Pennsylvania State University.
Philip L. Walker Jr., Evan Pugh professor of materials science at Penn State, 85, of State College, died March 22, at Hearthside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, State College, Pa.
Born Jan. 10, 1924, in Baltimore, he was a son of Philip and Mary Belle Walker. He received his bachelor of science degree in 1947 and his master of science degree in 1948 in chemical engineering from the Johns Hopkins University. In 1952, he earned his doctorate in fuel science from Penn State. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in World War II.
Bryan Gauntt who is advised by Elizabeth Dickey has received the 2009 Microscopy Society of America (MSA) Presidential Award. Bryan will receive this award at the Microscopy & Microanalysis Meeting held July 26-30, 2009 in Richmond, Virginia.
Congratulations Bryan!
Why a REU in Soft Materials at Penn State?
At Penn State, we have a long history of sustained contributions to materials science and we have strong institutional support to foster our efforts in soft materials. Penn State University has one of the country’s finest research efforts in materials and the Materials Science & Engineering Department is ranked within the top in both undergraduate and graduate studies. The MatSE faculty have considerable experience in mentoring undergraduate research, as a Senior Thesis is required for their B.S. degree.
Chen Receives the Materials Science Research Silver Award
Dr. Long-Qing Chen received the Materials Science Research Silver Award administered by the ASM Materials Science Division at the ASM’s Annual Awards Luncheon in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Materials Science Research Silver Medal was established in 1986 to recognize and honor an active materials scientist whose individual and collaborative work has had a major impact on the science of materials.
