Daniel Bucca, Ph.D., is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Washington, D.C., office. He focuses his practice on procuring, enforcing and licensing patent rights and strategic, worldwide patent portfolio counseling with particular emphasis on life science, chemical, pharmaceutical and energy technologies. Daniel has experience in managing and handling due diligence investigations, IP transactions, freedom-to-operate, patentability, validity and noninfringement opinions, and complex, global intellectual property matters including global litigation, appeals, and proceedings in U.S. and foreign patent offices including reexaminations, reissues, interferences, oppositions and nullity actions.

In terms of IP protection and analysis, Daniel has particular experience with pharmaceuticals, medical devices, polymer science, food sciences, lithium ion battery technologies, bio-based materials, biofuels, and hydrocarbon cracking technology. He also has extensive experience in protecting technology related to materials for clean energy technology, including solar and fuel cells.

Previously, Daniel conducted research in government laboratories, the semiconductor and chemical industry. He has published articles in a variety of journals and holds several patents from his research endeavors. Daniel’s professional associations include the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property, Northern Virginia Technology Council and the American Chemical Society.

Daniel received his B.S. in chemistry and his Ph.D. in polymer science, with an emphasis in material science and synthetic organic chemistry.  Daniel is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Virginia and is registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
