  Dr. S. Jill Glass, 1987 and 1990

Jill Glass manages the Materials Reliability Department at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Her department encompasses expertise in corrosion, electrochemistry, cleaning and contamination, gas analyses, multivariate data analysis methods, and the mechanical behavior and reliability of glasses and ceramics. Jill joined Sandia in 1990, and as a Principal Member of the Technical Staff, led and contributed to research, development, production and failure analysis activities primarily focused around glasses and ceramics.  Her areas of research include joining, ceramic powder compaction, stressed glasses, fragmentation of brittle materials, cermets, and glass ceramics. Jill has forty-five publications in these areas, several book chapters on the mechanical properties and characterization of ceramics, and three patents. She has taught short courses on ceramic and glass failure analysis.  Jill has been recognized for her work with Sandia President Quality Awards (1993, 2001, 2002), the American Welding Society R. L. Peaslee Brazing Award (2001), the American Ceramic Society Karl Schwartzwalder Award, an NNSA Weapons Award for Excellence (2002), and a Sandia Employee Recognition Award and a Lockheed Martin (LMC) NOVA Award for the Space Shuttle Columbia Accident Investigation (2003, 2004). Jill has mentored numerous students through Sandia's Career Exploration and Summer Internship Program, and does recruiting activities for Sandia.

Jill has been involved in a range of activities that support the American Ceramic Society (ACerS).  She is a past Chair of the New Mexico Section of the ACerS, is currently the Section’s Counselor, was Chair of the Annual Rio Grande Symposium on Advanced Materials (2006), and was a member of the Symposium organizing committee (2002-2008).  Jill has served as the Program Chair for the Basic Science Division of the ACerS (96-97) and will again in 08-09, and has organized or co-organized several ACerS symposia. She is the 2007-2008 Chair of the ACerS Awards committee, and has served on committees for the PACE Award, the Sosman Award, the Innovations in Glass Contest (2005-2007), and the Stookey Lecture of Discovery Award (2006-2007).

Jill has served as a science fair judge at local schools, was a section organizer for the 2007 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Albuquerque, and has presented at the annual School to World Day (8th graders) and the 2008 Expanding Your Horizons Conference (6-12 grade girls).  She teaches at the annual ASM Materials Camp for teachers in Albuquerque (2004-2008), and has been an Adult Basic Literacy tutor.

Jill obtained her B.S. in Ceramic Engineering (1984) from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, and her M.S degree (1987) and Ph.D (1990) in Ceramic Science from Penn State University. Her graduate work under Dr. David Green covered the processing and mechanical properties of novel infiltrated alumina-zirconia composites.
