  Dr. Charles G. Carson, III, 1966 and 1970
   

Charles G. Carson, III, earned a B.A. in chemistry from Williams
College, and a M.S. and Ph.D. in metallurgy from Penn State.  He joined
the United States Steel Corporation in 1970 as a research metallurgist,
and progressed through a series of technical and management positions
within the research department.  In 1985 he moved to U. S. Steel's
commercial department as manager of product development for tin mill
products;  in 1990 he was promoted to general manager of tin mill
products with responsibility for product-line sales, marketing, service
and product support.  Dr. Carson was appointed Vice President,
Environmental Affairs, in 1993. In this role he guided U. S. Steel's
environmental compliance and improvement activities, and coordinated
the Company's relations with environmental agencies and groups in the
United States and overseas. In addition he served as chairman of the
supervisory board of VSZ U. S. Steel s.r.o., a USS joint venture in
Slovakia in 1997 and 1998.  He was active in technical, marketing and
environmental committees of the American Iron and Steel Institute and
the International Iron and Steel Institute, and served on the boards of
several environmental groups, including Keep America Beautiful and the
Wildlife Habitat Council.  He retired from U. S. Steel in 2003.  Dr.
Carson has been recognized by the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences
with the Alumni Achievement Award in 1994, as a Centennial Fellow in
1996, with the McFarland Award in 1998, and by the University as an
Alumni Fellow in 2002.
