Description
Electronic and photonic materials have greatly changed modern
life. Without them, computers, telecommunication systems, compact
disc players, video cameras, and all the electronics with which
we have become accustomed would not be possible. The study
of electronic and photonic materials is a natural bridge between
the fields of electrical engineering and materials science.
Students in electrical engineering will benefit from this minor
because they will better understand the materials with which
they will design electronic and photonic devices, such as transistors
on a computer chip or semiconductor lasers in a compact disc
player. Training in the field of electronic and photonic materials
requires study of the processing and characterization of these
materials to help engineers develop ways to lower cost and
improve performance. This knowledge will help prepare students
to enter the semiconductor industry or pursue graduate studies.
Course Requirements
A total of 18 credits are required for the minor.
Required Introductory Courses (6
Credits)
1. MATSE 201* Introduction to Materials Science
2. E SC 314 Engineering Applications of Materials
or
E E 397E Introduction to Nano Electronics
Required Advanced Courses (6 Credits)
1. E E 441 Semiconductor Integrated Circuit Technology
2. MATSE 450** Synthesis and Processing of EPM
or
MATSE 455** Properties and Characterization of EPM
Elective Courses (6 Credits)
1. MATSE 400 Crystal Chemistry
2. MATSE 401 Thermodynamics of Materials
3. MATSE 402 Materials Process Kinetics
4. MATSE 413 Solid State Materials
(not acceptable if E SC 314 was taken)
5. MATSE 430 Materials Characterization
6. MATSE 435 Optical Properties of Materials
7. MATSE 450** Synthesis and Processing of EPM
(if not already counted as an advanced course)
8. MATSE 455** Properties and Characterization of EPM
(if not already counted as an advanced course)
9. MATSE 417 Electrical and Magnetic Properties of Ceramics
10. E E 442 Solid State Devices
11. E Sc 445 Semiconductor Optoelectronic Devices
* Some students have substituted E SC 414M as long as 6 credits
of MATSE were still taken.
** EE students are able to take the course as long as they
have taken MATSE 210 and E SC 314 rather than the current list
of prerequisites. For E SC students, E SC 414M and either MATSE
417, E SC 497A, EE 340 or E SC 314 are acceptable substitutes
for the prerequisites. |
